David Pawson Speaks about how Pseudo-Grace had Spread from Singapore to the World: Unconditional Forgiveness of Future Sins, No-Repentance Gospel & Mixture of Half-Truths with Errors Deception – By Rev George Ong (Dated 29 Oct 2021)

(This article was also sent to Rev Dr Ngoei Foong Nghian, General Secretary, NCCS office, and for the attention of the Executive Committee Members.)

In a previous update dated 11 September 2021, I wrote that David Pawson was so burdened to come to Singapore some years ago to address the dangerous and poisonous grace doctrine of Joseph Prince that had spread from Singapore to distant South Africa.

Please click to view the previous article, “Why was David Pawson Burdened for Singapore?”

In this article, David Pawson spoke (in Singapore as he did in the previous article) about how Pseudo-grace had spread from Singapore to the world.

He elaborated on the doctrine by focussing on 3 areas: Unconditional Forgiveness of Future Sins, No-Repentance Gospel & Mixture of Half-Truths with Errors Deception.

Please click to view the 9-minute video of David Pawson (for those who do not have the luxury of time to view the video, you may wish to read the verbatim notes appended below instead):

From Singapore, Pseudo-Grace Spreads to the World

“But your major problem in Singapore is not irresistible force, it’s unconditional forgiveness (Pseudo-grace). And I have to say that this third understanding of grace (Pseudo-grace), which can be found in America, is spreading throughout the world from this city (of Singapore). And I came across it all over South Africa when I was there 2 years ago. And I said, ‘Where did you get all this from?’ And they said, ‘Singapore.’

1. Unconditional Forgiveness of Future Sins

So I must be honest and share with you what I believe is a misunderstanding of God’s beautiful grace in interpreting it as unconditional forgiveness. It’s good in the sense that it gives God glory for His grace, for His free grace. But it’s bad because it takes that free grace to an extreme teaching in 2 particulars:

First, in teaching that when you come to Christ, all your future sins are forgiven as well as your past. Now I can’t find any trace in my Bible of God forgiving sins that have not yet been committed…

So what do these people who say, ‘God has forgiven all your future sins’ do with that chapter (1 John 1)? I was astonished to find they deny that it was written to Christians. And they say it was written to pagans, the first chapter of 1 John. And when you read that letter, everything in it is clearly addressed to Christians. And to twist that scripture and make it something only for pagans is almost laughable, but it’s so serious that it’s not. It’s denying what scripture is saying. That’s unconditional forgiveness: When you come to Christ, all your sins are forgiven, not just everything you’ve committed in the past but everything you will yet commit in the future. So don’t get morbid and think about your sins. That’s the kind of teaching that comes out of that. That’s tragic teaching. It may make a lot of people happy but it’s not the truth.”

2. No-Repentance Gospel

“The other thing that follows from this is a downplaying of repentance. Unconditional forgiveness doesn’t really depend on repentance. In my understanding of scripture, unrepented sins can’t be forgiven – that we need to repent first and then that sin can be forgiven.

And to repent isn’t just saying sorry. It’s doing something. Both repentance and faith in my understanding of scripture are things that we do. But both the Calvinists and the ‘Free Grace’ (Pseudo-grace) as it’s sometimes been called – Dietrich Bonhoeffer called it ‘cheap grace,’ this third understanding of grace tends to downplay anything that we need to do. And repentance and faith are things that we need to do. So on the whole, repentance is not often mentioned; it is downplayed.

And yet for Paul, this was absolutely central to his preaching… ‘I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision so I preach repentance to the gentiles that they should turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds’ (Acts 26:19-20). Why don’t preachers ever preach that – that repentance is something you prove by your deeds? That’s what Paul used to preach. He said to the people of Athens, ‘Until now God has winked at your sins, he has overlooked it, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent’ (Acts 17:30). That was his preaching. It was basic. Repent. Repent. Repent.”

“I think I’ve said enough for you to recognise this error when you come across it. It is widespread. It (Pseudo-grace) originated in America, but it’s got a huge hold here in Singapore and is spreading through the internet throughout the world. And everywhere I go to preach, I come across it. So please have discernment you pastors. Recognise these errors which are distorting the truth of God.”

3. Mixture of Half-Truths with Errors Deception

“We are told in scripture that towards the end of this age, the greatest danger for Christians will be deception. And we are not deceived by lies. We are deceived when truth is mixed with error.

The devil if he told outright lies, we’d simply say, ‘no’ to him. But the devil is so clever; he deceives people by mixing the truth in with it. And the error of grace that I have mentioned is often mixed in with the true gospel and with many true things that are being preached with it. And it’s the mixture that deceives.

That’s been true ever since the Garden of Eden. What Satan said to Eve was half true and she swallowed it. He said, ‘If you take this fruit, your eyes will be opened’, that was true, ‘and you will be like Gods’ – and that was not true. And it was the mixture that fooled Eve and Adam who was standing by her side at the same time.

And ever since, the devil, who is far cleverer than us has persuaded people to mix the truths of the gospel with some things that are not true. And it’s that mixture that is so deceptive. It sounds most of the time as if you are listening to the truth. But if you listen carefully, there are things being slipped in that have no biblical basis. That’s where the danger lies.

And as we get near the end of time, the devil gets more desperate. And that’s why 5 times in just one chapter (Matt 24), when Jesus told us what the end would be signalled by, what to watch for. After each sign, he gave them, he said ‘Don’t be deceived. Don’t be deceived. Don’t be deceived.’”

“When we read the scriptures, I’m afraid we have to face the fact that it’s not all straightforward. And the deception will take place inside the church, and tragically, will affect the Christian living of so many people. Well, go to a church that preaches the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. And guard your hearts against the subtle mixture that deceives and destroys.”

Rev George Ong’s Comments:

From Singapore, Pseudo-Grace Spreads to the World

David Pawson said,

“And I have to say that this third understanding of grace (Pseudo-grace), which can be found in America, is spreading throughout the world from this city (of Singapore).”

“I think I’ve said enough for you to recognise this error when you come across it. It is widespread. It (Pseudo-grace) originated in America, but it’s got a huge hold here in Singapore and is spreading through the internet throughout the world. And everywhere I go to preach, I come across it.”

What David Pawson had shared brings to our mind that because no concrete action was taken by the Singapore Church Leadership to warn and stop Joseph Prince from spreading his heresies in Singapore, tragically, they have now engulfed the world.

It is so sad that instead of the Singapore Church Leadership feeling sorry and taking responsibility for not addressing the issue of Joseph Prince’s heresies throughout all these years, some are even pretty defensive about it. One Pastor (not from NCCS) from a certain denomination is even very aggressive against us about the issue.

Where is the sense of humility by the leadership to admit their fault? Where is their sense of responsibility for not doing what they ought to have done? Here, we are not talking about ordinary members or even middle echelon leaders, we are talking about the top leaders of the Singapore Church. If the top leadership doesn’t model for us what humility and responsibility is, who would?

It is like a man, who, because he was too lazy to clean up and take care of his own backyard, resulting in a foul smell that not only filled his whole house but the stinky odour has also engulfed a large part of the neighbourhood. The neighbours, being very accommodative, didn’t confront the man for over a month until the smell became unbearable. Some neighbours then lodge a complaint against the man for causing the foul smell and politely ask him to clean up his backyard. Other neighbours also confronted the man that he must stop the smell as it was affecting their sickly and elderly parents with lung problems, who found it hard to breath properly. They expressed the fear that this might be detrimental to the health of their elderly parents.

What must the man do? No apologies to his neighbours? Not taking responsibility for his own laziness of not cleaning up his backyard? Pretending that the stench isn’t affecting the neighbourhood? Living his life as per normal and treating as if nothing has really happened, and letting the stinky smell gets worse and worse by the day and affecting an even bigger part of the neighbourhood? Impossible!

When Joseph Prince’s heresies have spread from Singapore to infect the many nations of the world, not a single word of responsibility or apology has come from the Singapore Church Leadership! Not a single piece of action has been taken to address the issue so far – after how long? – after 20 over years! Can you beat that?

What is worse is the Singapore Church Leadership is still sitting on the Joseph Prince issue as if it is a matter that is relatively unimportant that doesn’t require urgent action – as more and more sheep are being deceived by the day by the heresies of Joseph Prince to their destruction.

But the worst that has already happened is that they are even defending Joseph Prince that he isn’t a heretic. Please check with Bishop Dr Gordon Wong from NCCS if you wish to know the details. This is unbelievable!

If Bishop Dr Gordon Wong dares to declare, publicly, that Joseph Prince isn’t a heretic, I will challenge him, publicly, that he, a Singapore bishop, is engaging in falsehood!

This is like the man, who had caused the foul stench to the whole neighbourhood, which I alluded to. And then he decides to declare to his whole neighbourhood that what he had done to cause the stinky smell is not wrong, as he has the right to do whatever is within the compound of his own house. And that he would continue with his lazy habit of not cleaning up his backyard. And if the smell in his own backyard would get worse and affect a larger region, it is not his responsibility and no apologies would be forthcoming from him.

Let me share with you this story about Truth and Lies:

The Lie said to the Truth, “Let’s take a bath together, the well water is very nice.”

So they got naked and bathed. Suddenly, the Lie leapt out of the water and fled, wearing the clothes of the Truth.

The Truth, furious, climbed out of the well to get her clothes back. But the world, upon seeing the naked Truth, looked away, with anger and contempt. Poor Truth returned to the well and disappeared forever, hiding her shame.

Since then, the Lie runs around the world, dressed as the Truth, and society is very happy…

Because the world has no desire to know the naked Truth.

(Author cannot be firmly established)

Though the story ends on a sad note – the hero was vanquished while the villain triumphed,

be warned (for those who engaged in falsehood for their own self-preservation)

and encouraged (for those who stood for truth and paid a high price)

that Truth shall ultimately prevail and falsehood shall finally be judged on the day of God’s judgement.

Never be short-sighted. Always take the long view!

1. Unconditional Forgiveness of Future Sins

There is no need for me to comment on this issue as there is already enough discussion on this matter on my website.

2. No-Repentance Gospel

The No-Repentance gospel of Joseph Prince is what I had already covered in 2 previous updates:

“Joseph Prince’s No-Repentance Gospel Will Make You Perish!” (Click to view)

“Joseph Prince’s Only-Believe & No-Repentance Half-Gospel Will Send You to Hell!” (Click to view)

The shocking thing is that Joseph Prince isn’t just teaching a No-Repentance Gospel, but he is also teaching the following:

No-repentance,

No-obedience,

No-discipleship,

No-cost-of-Christianity,

No-sacrifice,

No-suffering,

No-persecution,

No-martyrdom,

No-law,

No-effort,

No-works,

No-fasting,

No-more-moral-commandments-of-God-to-obey,

No-fear-of-God,

No-more-anger-from-God,

No-more-punishment-from-God,

No-more-judgement-from-God,

No-sanctification-for-salvation,

No-more-pleasing-and-loving God,

No-more-examination-of-self,

No-more-sins-to-confess,

No-more-conviction-of-sin-from-the-Holy-Spirit,

No-more-sin-to-deal-with,

No-more-guilt-to-bother-you-with

grace theology.

Just by listing all these ‘no-items’, gives me a deep shiver down my spine that given his fantastically long list of false teachings, how on earth could people, especially the Singapore Bishops and Pastors, still not believe that Joseph Prince is a heretic?

With reference to all the ‘no-items’, this simply means that every Bible passage that is related to and supports each of the above ‘items’ has been ‘taken away’ or ‘deleted’ by Joseph Prince from the Bible.

Because he teaches a false gospel minus sanctification,

he ‘takes away’ all the verses that support the essentiality of sanctification for salvation.

Because he teaches that there is no more the need to confess our sins,

he ‘takes away’ 1 John 1:9 by twisting the interpretation to the view that it is written for unbelievers and not for believers.

Because he teaches repentance that involves only the change of mind,

he ‘takes away’ all verses that have to do with a repentance that involves works and life change.

Because he teaches that all the moral commandments of God have been superceded,

he ‘takes away’ all verses about commandments by twisting the interpretation of them.

Because he teaches that the New Covenant is not about our love for God,

he ‘takes away’ all verses in the New Testament that have to do with our love for God.

He simply ‘deletes’ or ‘subtracts’ many of these verses by his spurious explanation that they are no longer applicable to New Covenant believers. Even the teachings of Christ (the Son of God and God Himself), including the Sermon on the Mount and discipleship, are not spared.

What is more shocking is that Joseph Prince has the audacity to ‘delete’ or ‘subtract’ chunks of scriptures in the four gospels as he considers them to be no longer applicable to New Covenant believers. This is because they are placed by him under the Old Covenant, even though the gospels are part of New Testament scriptures.

He ‘deletes’ or ‘subtracts’ every passage that has to do with the tough demands and the high cost of discipleship that Jesus personally teaches in the four gospels. He does that by falsely explaining them away as not applicable to New Covenant believers and by twisting these texts to mean what they don’t.

For example, in the Sermon on the Mount, he ‘takes away’ or ‘subtracts’ Matthew 6:14-15 for New Covenant believers because of his view that this is under the Old Covenant, and therefore no longer applicable to New Covenant believers.

Matthew 6:14-15 NIV

14 “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

He cannot accept the view which is taught by Christ that we must forgive to be forgiven. By doing that, he is going head-on against what Christ had taught.

He also ‘takes away’ or ‘subtracts’ Matthew 6:16-18 in the Sermon on the Mount by his teaching that there is no requirement for New Covenant believers to fast.

Matthew 6:16-18 NIV

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

That is not all.

He ‘takes away’ or ‘subtracts’ Matthew 6:27-30 in the Sermon on the Mount, by ridiculing that it is impossible to follow what Jesus came to warn us of.

Matthew 6:27-30 NIV

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”

Imagine the audacity of Joseph Prince who dares to ‘take away’ the passage that Jesus has meant to be used to warn His people from hell. This means those who listen to Joseph Prince and fail to pay heed to the warnings of Jesus would end up in hell too.

No one would dare to ‘take away’ chunks and chunks from the scriptures except for a heretic!

If such blatant mistreatment of chunks of scriptures representing the word of God does not cause righteous anger to arise from within you against Joseph Prince, then something has really gone wrong with you!

“If true shepherds of the Church do not rise to castigate Joseph Prince for such a treacherous treatment of God’s word, the rocks will shout out loud in forceful protest!” (George Ong)

Joseph Prince is no different from Marcion (AD 85-AD 160) who was declared a heretic by the Church when he rejected the entire Old Testament along with portions of the New Testament, including most of the gospels as scriptures, all because they contradict his theology of a nice and loving God. This is because Joseph Prince, himself, has also rejected the main bulk of the gospels as binding on us as he teaches that they were spoken by Jesus before the cross.

Joseph Prince, by ‘taking away’ or ‘subtracted’ many of these crucial passages from the Bible has committed a heinous sin, which, according to Revelation 22:18-19, would result in the removal of his eternal inheritance by Christ.

3. Mixture of Half-Truths with Errors Deception

I totally agree with David Pawson, who said,

“And we are not deceived by lies. We are deceived when truth is mixed with error… And the error of grace that I have mentioned is often mixed in with the true gospel and with many true things that are being preached with it. And it’s the mixture that deceives… That’s been true ever since the Garden of Eden. What Satan said to Eve was half true and she swallowed it.

That’s where the danger lies.”

Joseph Prince’s key strategy of deception is to posture the half-truth as the whole truth and by mixing the half-truths with errors or lies. Most people are deceived by Joseph Prince because of the crafty ‘half-truth strategy’, which he liberally employs.

False teachers aren’t that stupid to give themselves away so easily by coming undisguised as a wolf and telling you everything that is false.

“If you are looking for a false teacher who comes as an undisguised wolf to tell you all the outright lies, you can comb the whole world twice over, and still, you wouldn’t be able to find him.” (George Ong)

“The story of the Little Red Riding Hood aptly illustrates that the false teacher would never come as a devouring wolf to scare you but cleverly disguised as your most loving grandmother in the faith to destroy you.” (George Ong)

False teachers like Joseph Prince start with half-truths to hook you first, such as “God is love” or “Jesus is full of grace” or “Jesus is so forgiving” and keep repeating it umpteen number of times, week in and week out.

Can you fault him for doing that? You can’t really – as he is repeating truths – even though they are half-truths.

And before you know it, you have already been bought over by the deception that the half-truth represents the whole truth – that God is only loving and Jesus is only gracious and forgiving.

“The half-truth deception which is repeatedly propagated, would, over time, be subconsciously accepted by listeners as the whole truth without them even realising it.” (George Ong)

So false teachers would never come undisguised as a wolf or be telling you all the outright lies. If they do, even a little child can tell they are heretics. That is why I couldn’t believe that Pastors can be so naïve when they say to me, “How can Joseph Prince be a heretic when he is not a Jehovah’s witness and is preaching Jesus and the gospel?”

We must remember that we are not dealing with those clear-cut heretics such as Jehovah’s Witness or Mormons. Even an average believer can tell them apart from True Christians. We are dealing with the wolf (Joseph Prince) who has come in sheepskin in disguise as an angel of light, and is operating ‘undercover’ in the Church. He seems to be preaching truths but, in reality, they are mixed with errors. That’s why many Pastors in Singapore and even a Bishop have been deceived by Joseph Prince.

Very few would be deceived by a Jehovah’s Witness, whose teachings are mostly clear-cut false. But many would be deceived by Joseph Prince who postures half-truths as truths and mixes truths with falsehoods.

Let me give you some concrete examples of Joseph Prince’s half-truth ‘theology’:

– Grace Without Law

– Forgiveness Without Confession

– Salvation Without Repentance

– Blessing Without Suffering

– Prosperity Without Persecution

– Protection Without Martyrdom

– Justification Without Sanctification

– Loving God Without Fearing God

– The Love of God Without The Judgement of God

– The Favour of God Without The Anger of God

– The Mercy of God Without The Wrath of God

– The Comfort of God Without The Punishment of God

– Being Sons of God Without Being Slaves of God

– Being a Christian Without Being a Disciple

– Receiving Jesus as Saviour Without Receiving Jesus as Lord

– Salvation by Faith Only Without a Salvation Proven by Works

– Salvation by Right-Believing Only Without a Salvation Evidenced by Obedience

– A Repentance that Changes our Minds Without A Repentance that Changes our Lives

– Heaven Without Hell

As for the last item, Heaven Without Hell, though Joseph Prince says he believes in hell, he is so reticent and even unwilling to talk about it as if it is non-existent. He ‘cleverly’ ‘deletes’ hell from the scriptures by not speaking about it (or he hardly speaks about it) even to unbelievers in the preaching of his grace gospel.

In all the examples, Joseph Prince teaches only the first half of the truth. As for the second half of it, he either keeps silent on them, or he teaches against them.

“Joseph Prince’s craftiness is in presenting the pleasant half-truths (what God has done for us) to sound like the whole truth and the other unpleasant half-truths (what we must do for Him) to sound like legalism.” (George Ong)

Did you notice that the first half of the truth that Joseph Prince emphasises and teaches is the pleasant half that appeals to our comfort zone? And do you also realise that the second half that Joseph Prince is against and ‘hides’ from people is the unpleasant half that irks our comfort zone?

The half-truth deception plays on pleasing the flesh which would readily embrace the pleasant half of the truth but be easily put-off by the unpleasant half of it.

The chief reason for the growth of Joseph Prince’s church is that he preaches a theology that panders to fleshly desires – championing the pleasant half about God’s mercy and forgiveness that everyone cheers, while concealing and even obliterating the unpleasant half about God’s anger and wrath that none will protest.

The half-truth strategy of Joseph Prince – grace without law, forgiveness without confession, blessing without suffering, the love of God without the judgement of God – is what is so humanly appealing but eternally destructive.

Let me summarise Joseph Prince’s false doctrine which is built on half-truths and give you another more elaborate presentation of it in 40 phrases as follows:

(As you will begin to realise, many of these so-called half-truths on the left-hand column don’t even qualify to be truths.)

– Salvation by Faith Only Without a Salvation Proven by Works

– Salvation by Faith Only Without a Salvation Evidenced by Obedience

– Grace Without Law

– New Covenant is about God loving us and not Us loving God Versus New Covenant is about God loving us and Us loving God

– God is Forever Pleased with Man and Man Mustn’t Try to Please God Versus God is not always Pleased with Man and We are called to Please God

– Heaven Without Hell (Though Joseph Prince says he believes in hell, he hardly, is so reticent and even ‘unusually shy’ to talk about it as if it is non-existent)

There are many, including pastors who even hold to the view that Joseph Prince’s theology is just an over-emphasis on grace. But just by looking at the half-truth beliefs of Joseph Prince Grace theology will convince any pastor worth his salt that it is blatantly false and patently heretical pure and simple.

As a matter of fact, we don’t need all or many or even a few, but just one phrase (see below) of the above 40 phrases to qualify Joseph Prince’s teaching as heretical:

– Justification without Sanctification is sufficient for Salvation Versus Justification and Sanctification are both necessary for Salvation

“Joseph Prince’s false grace doctrine of a Gospel minus Sanctification is as grave and false as the Galatian error of a Gospel plus Circumcision.” (George Ong)

“Just as one drop of poison can contaminate a big jar of water, just one drop of heretical poison can prove the falsity of one’s doctrine.” (George Ong)

Since just one issue alone about a ‘Gospel minus Sanctification’ is enough to qualify Joseph Prince’s doctrine as heretical, it is plain theological madness if anyone, especially the Singapore Church Leadership, still can’t see it!

I will revisit this issue again in a coming article, titled, “Joseph Prince Teaches Against Jesus On The Requirement Of Sanctification For Salvation.”

Let me leave you with this final quote,

“A hard-truth of Jesus that shakes paradoxically liberates; a half-truth of Joseph Prince that placates ultimately devastates.” (George Ong)

The many hard truths that Jesus shakes the people with is finally to liberate, but the many half-truths of Joseph Prince, even though it placates, will finally devastate.

If you foolishly reject the hard-truths of Jesus and stubbornly embrace the half-truths of Joseph Prince, not only will you not be liberated but you will also be devastated.

This is almost exactly what David Pawson said at the end of his teaching in the video,

“Guard your hearts against the subtle mixture that deceives and destroys.”

Truly, as David Pawson had put it, ‘the mixture of truth with errors or lies’ heresy of Joseph Prince does not only deceive but what is more damaging is that it will also destroy you.

Who would you trust – David Pawson, a world-renowned Bible teacher or Joseph Prince, the smooth-talking heretic? David Pawson, who had taught against the doctrine of Joseph Prince,

said that his doctrine is one that will destroy you. If you trust David Pawson, you had better flee from Joseph Prince, lest you be destroyed in your faith and the lake of fire.

Finally, David Pawson said,

“And the deception will take place inside the church, and tragically, will affect the Christian living of so many people.”

Though it is a simple truth that was stated by David Pawson, “And the deception will take place inside the church,” and yet many, including NCCS, have missed it.

The deception of Joseph Prince’s heresies that has, indeed, infiltrated the Singapore Church and the rest of the world, has been tolerated for too long. It’s time for NCCS to wake up from her deep slumber and put an end to this!
